TRUTH. Leo is bold and doesn’t shrink from upsetting those who wish he would not speak truth. Roar it out, Leo – loud and proud from your loving Heart. Ultimately it will be heard!
From the shade of the tree, Leo the Lion wakes, growls and shakes his mane. There are urgent matters to be dealt with. It’s time to move, to demonstrate some Leonine intensity – some focussed energy. Your long rest will become fierce action.
He speaks: “I do not understand the necessity for constant movement. Sometimes, I rest and sometimes I must move to seek food or to defend those I love. Now is such a time. In defence or anger modes, I roar so loudly that the ground shakes. I focus my full attention and move with speed, decisively. Afterwards I expect the respect I deserve. I have grace, dignity, strength, courage, pride and efficiency. You might not see me coming but you will feel it when I pounce.”
Here comes the New Moon in Leo – in opposition to Saturn in Aquarius, square Uranus and trine Chiron in Aries. The New Moon challenges us to act decisively in times when people are confused, divided and conflicted. There can be no more apathy or indecision. The lunar month begins on the 8th August at 2.50pm. The New Moon is conjunct Mercury in Leo (7 degrees) and sits close to Mars in Virgo, the apex forming a T square with the Nodal axis (SN Sagittarius/NN Gemini). These are explosive and significant times. Mercury opposes Jupiter in Aquarius – there are likely to be explosive and spontaneous communications.
Leo is a Fire Sign, ruled by the Sun and Fixed in nature. It’s hard to separate the characteristics of Lion from the energy of Leo. Dynamic, gentle, fierce to the point of lethal, lover, enemy, leader. All live together within the same energy. He is protector, hunter, defender and attacker. There is also courage, wisdom, self-indulgence and self-sacrifice for tribe, a love of comfort – a tendency to roam, hunt, conquer. It’s as if all of life and its innate contradictions are encompassed in Leo – just as they are within the energy of the Sun, the energy at the Heart of the Universe and in our own hearts.
Each sign and every planet contain all the nuances of contradiction but none more intensely, in my opinion, than Leo the Lion. Placed as it is, this is an opportunity for a fierce New Beginning and a powerful opportunity for us all to take charge and to focus our energy, poised as we are on the brink of our journey into the future. What would we like to have achieved by this time next year? At this time of massive confusion and disintegration – and potential restructure, perhaps a more important question than ever before?
Leo rules the Fifth House – that of creativity, ideas, children and pleasurable activities. This new lunar month is the moment to charge up our personal creative energy machines with the fires of Leo and go for it!
The intentions we make at the beginning of this lunar moonth are likely to have particularly powerful repercussions and need to be made with particular clarity.

Sit quietly in a comfortable space, focussing on fire or a candle flame. Become aware of the presence of Love – starting within your heart, moving within your body and eventually spiralling out into the world…… Visualise the energy spreading beyond the Earth and out into the universe. Become aware of love moving into the new areas of space into which we are moving as we shift beyond the magnetic shield, the protection behind which we have lived all our lives until now. This is new space, a shift, a new situation – and we need to consciously adjust. All old systems must be broken down before we can rebuild them and fully retune ourselves. Like a Lion exploring unknown territory, we need courage, openness, focus, adaptability and physical, emotional and mental strength.
Allow your openness to visualise a restructured, loving, dynamic and beautiful world. Allow details to appear – colours, images, other beings, scent, situations. We seek harmony with each other, nature, animals and the environment.
- Which details, of your meditational journey could you choose to explore this moonth – emotionally, physically, what are you aiming for? How could you use your dose of Leonine determination and strength, to make changes to your own life that are more in line with your visions?

- What obstructs your security and peace of mind? How can you break through them in the manner of lion?
- How can you spread more love and compassion amongst others?
- Finding a balance between ‘resting Lion’ and ‘energetic Lion’ is important in these times when we are trying to find balance. Resolve to find ways of creating work/play balance?
- Resolve to increase self-esteem and self-confidence. We need a sense of our own strength, worth and dignity!
IN A MUNDANE KIND OF WAY
This New Moon delivers us six Fixed sign planets – Sun, Moon and Mercury (Leo) Uranus (Taurus), Saturn and Jupiter (Aquarius). Fixed signs prefer stillness – of a sort – eg Leo has a tendency to attach to ‘pride’, Aquarius to ‘ideas’ and Taurus to ‘the material world’. Earthquakes, volcanoes, explosions, revolutions, protests are likely as the Fixed signs take their ‘stances’ and tension rises. More people are likely to find the courage to speak TRUTH – with less fear. Novel! We seem to have painted ourselves into corners where lies have become acceptable. This can’t go on.
Jupiter moved back into Aquarius on 28th July and will remain there until December. There will be some revisiting of some of the technical and communal ideas that were mooted between December 2020 and May 2021. The Leo New Moon urges new technical creations forward. However, there is still ongoing resistance and the ‘push me pull you’ tendency of these times continues – and is likely to until demolition is complete. The universe is insisting on replacing not only the walls – but also the foundations. (2024, final PLUTO move into Aquarius is eagerly awaited!)
Leo is bold and doesn’t shrink from distain for those who wish he would stop telling truths. Mercury screams alongside him, skipping through three different signs this month – from Leo through Virgo and into Libra, his manner of expression changeable and fast-moving. The T square of New Moon opposite Saturn square Uranus is also tight and powerful. Like massive plates pushing against each other on the surface of the earth, the tension will increase until something gives and shifts suddenly and violently. We are surrounded by chaos and confusion, caused by widely opposing factions, still in conflict – those who seek ultimate power and control on one side and those who seek radical change on the other. There is little point in repeating what comes down to the constant tug of war between ‘left’ and ‘right’ – the obvious reflection and manifestation of the present astrological climate.
Our thoughts have immense power! We create our future with every thought we have and every intention we make!
